EAGLES

Mourning Geothermica

Philippine eagle "Guiliang-guilang" paired to Philippine eagle "Kalabugao" was seen watching over his young juvenile. During this particular observation, the juvenile was being chased by other birds in the area. Photos by Journalist Erwin Mascariñas

Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon is home to Philippine eagle pair Kalabugao (female) and Guilang-guilang (male).

On April 26, our team led by PEF Director for Research and Conservation Dr. Jayson Ibañez together with the Bantay Kalasan Forest Guards of Manolo Fortich Bukidnon, and Journalist Erwin Mascariñas spotted the pair’s second eaglet. It is still dependent on Kalabugao and Guilang-guilang for food and will stay in the nest for a few more months before it completely fledges. This juvenile Philippine eagle was hatched on the 3rd nest made by the pair in their eight years of being together.

The eagle family was sighted towards the end of the Banog Banog Aerial, Arts, Music & Food Festival that celebrates the nesting of the Philippine eagle pair in the municipality of Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon.

The rainy season in June challenged the construction of the Philippine Eagle Conservation Breeding Sanctuary (PECBS). Sans access road and the muddy slopes made hauling materials to the site even more difficult. Building the enclosures on inclined terrain also slowed down to put safety first.

Although we did not make schedule for the transfer in June, all holding cages, keeper bunkhouse, food preparation area, and the steps to the core facility were completed. We have also started building a breeding chamber for one of the pairs that will be moved to the site.

We want to keep you updated on the development of this initiative. Here's how it started and how it is going now.

Biodiversity Surveys in Apayao Pushing for UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Declaration

Apayao has large areas of lowland forest cover, considered to be one of the few remaining forest patches in Northern Luzon. We have been working with the Apayao LGU since 2015 in studying the Philippine eagle nesting sites in Calanasan.

We conducted a biodiversity survey with Dr. Analyn Cabras, Affiliate Researcher of Davao Oriental State University and Dr. Matthew Van Dam, Affiliate Researcher of the Institute of Biodiversity Science and Sustainability, California Academy of Sciences with representative from the Provincial LGU Apayao, Municipal LGU Calanasan, DENR - Cordillera Administrative Region, DENR Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office - Luna, Apayao, and DENR City Environment and Natural Resources Office - Calanasan. The expedition focused on beetles which will support the ongoing efforts for Apayao to be designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The survey was supported by San Roque Power Corporation.

Declaring Apayao as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve will give the province recognition, support, and opportunities from international institutions. This exemplifies the benefits of sustainable conservation practices.

FORESTS

ALI-Davao Carbon Forest awarded as
"Best Ecosystem Restoration Initiative"

The ALI Davao Carbon Forest (ADCF) in Davao City is one of eight forest restoration projects in Southeast Asia to be awarded "Best Ecosystem Restoration Initiative" by the ASEAN Green Initiative.

This award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of thousands of volunteers who have contributed to growing the ADCF and all our partners from the private sector, government, universities, schools, civil society organizations, Indigenous communities, and families who participated in the project.

The efforts at ADCF began in 2018 with the goal of restoring an 11-hectare grassland to its original forest state. Since then, more than 30,000 native and fast-growing canopy-forming trees have been planted, creating a new green space at the heart of suburban Davao City. This new forest acts as a carbon sink, a home to many endemic flora and fauna, and a nature park for Davao residents.

Photos courtesy of ASEAN Center for Biodiversity.

From April to June 2023, the ALI-Davao Carbon Forest has:

An additional 800 seedlings of shade-loving species planted

Over 200 volunteers engaged in tree nurturing activities which include planting, plot maintenance, and seedling care

All plots planted with tree species that will eventually form a canopy

An arboretum within the Monkayo Pag-asa Carbon Forest

TDCX Philippines adopts a 2-hectare plot in the Monkayo Pag-asa Carbon Forest (MPCF), officially launched as the "PEF x TDCX Pag-asa Arboretum". Native and endemic tree species such as Lauan, Narra, Dao, Salingogon, Ipil, and Pili were planted starting with 50 saplings.

The MPCF is supported Reduce Reuse Grow Inc., Cantilan Bank, LGU Municipality of Monkayo , Barangay LGU of Banlag, the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office of Davao de Oro DENR - PENRO Davao de Oro, Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office of Monkayo, TDCX Philippines, and the Banlag Santol Kalikasan Workers Association (BASAKWA).

OUR FUTURE

Banog-banog Festival Celebrates Philippine Eagle Breeding Success in Manolo Fortich

Banog Banog Aerial, Arts, Music & Food Festival is the first and only LGU-initiated festival dedicated to our National Bird. This year marks their 4th year of gathering people from all over the country, artists, cooks, social media personalities, for weeks of festivities in celebration of Philippine Eagle conservation. Part of the proceeds from the event will be directed towards the protection of Philippine eagle pair "Kalabugao" and "Guilang-guilang" who are nesting in Manolo Fortich.

Our Philippine eagle mascot Malaya also joined the festivities. Malaya visited the children in Barangay Guilang-guilang for a Learn with Malaya session and went to Sitio Bagalangit where she met Ms. Philippines - Earth Candidates.

Capping off the festival, our team spotted Philippine eagles "Guilang-guilang" and his young in the last few days of the month-long celebration

Saribuhay Quizbowl back after its COVID-19 hiatus

We organized this year's "Saribuhay" Davao Region Wildlife Quiz Bowl with the Mapua Malayan Colleges Mindanao, last May 27. Catalunan Pequeño National High School rose to the top, followed by Senior High School in Digos City, and Bato National High School. They will represent the Davao Region in the National Quiz Bowl in November 2023.

From the power of dreams and service to the importance of frogs, the participants heard various motivational and informative talks on biodiversity from our partners:

PEF Conservation Breeding Program leads training on Proper Wildlife Handling

Last June 6 & 7, our Conservation Breeding Program, led by Senior Animal Keeper Dominic Tadena facilitated the Capability Building on Forest Law Enforcement and Wildlife Handling. It is a training workshop of the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) of Cotabato. The 2-day program gave the attendees a hands-on session in handling wildlife to ensure their safety and that of the animals, should the need arise in future retrieval operations.

During the training, the team handled a variety of animals, including a Reticulated Python and raptors such as Brahminy Kite, White-bellied Sea Eagle, and Giant Scops Owl. These are the species that are most often reported to be in need of retrieval in the PENRO Cotabato team's area of jurisdiction.

A pedestal dedicated to our Honorary Trustee and Philippine Eagle Conservation Champion Dr. Robert "Bob" Kennedy

Trustee of the Philippine Eagle Foundation. Along with this appointment, we named a walkway in the Philippine Eagle Center “The Kennedy Way” in honor of our champion and friend, Bob who helped launch the Monkey-eating Eagle Conservation Program in the 70s which later grew into the organization that we are today.

We hosted Bob’s 50th anniversary return to the Philippines in August 2022 when he ran the 102-km Bataan Death March route in two days and dedicated it to Philippine eagle conservation. He raised funds and gave over PHP 1 million in donations to the PEF last year while rallying people in the Philippines and the US to support the cause.

INTERNSHIPS

AT THE PEC

AgiLaya goes to MEGA MANILA

AgiLaya is our behavioral change campaign geared towards fostering collective support for Philippine Eagle conservation. Through a series of educational programs and events, AgiLaya underscores the threats of shooting and hunting and challenges to the mission. The goal is to reach a wider audience of different age groups and people from all walks of life, and engage them to be proactive in saving the country’s national bird.

This year’s Philippine Eagle Week from June 3-12 was dedicated to this campaign. For the first time, we held the PEW outside Davao City and in Metro Manila and Laguna with the support of Universities and our conservation partners, namely, UP Diliman, Ateneo De Manila University, De La Salle University, and UP Los Baños, FDC Utilities Inc., San Roque Power Corporation, Seda Vertis North, Seda BGC, Seda Nuvali, Seda Residences Makati, together with Boysen and Enchanted Kingdom, with the support of Aguila Auto Glass.

In partnership with Seda Hotels and Enchanted Kingdom, we conducted “Learn with Malaya” (LWM) for children aged 4-13 years old. With this age group, we took a fun and interactive approach through games, a dance to learn about eagle behaviors, and a story about Philippine eagles in the wild. Parents and guardians were also part of the audience. Their participation can help in sustaining their children’s interest in the Philippine eagle and in knowledge retention and values formation beyond the activities.

We highlighted Philippine eagles “Mayumi” and “Enchanting Kagitingan ” adopted by Seda Hotels and Enchanted Kingdom respectively.

“Malaya Goes To…” (MGT) is a program designed for students aged 20-21 years old in partnership with UP Diliman, Ateneo De Manila University, De La Salle University, and UP Los Baños. We screened the documentary “To Save Our Eagle'' followed by discussions from which pressing concerns in eagle conservation surfaced. Students shared their insights on the importance of law enforcement and policy reform to make eagle protection effective. Furthermore, we informed them about the prerequisites for an eagle’s reintroduction to the wild.

AgiLaya in Apayao

The AgiLaya Campaign in Apayao reached over 420 families in the municipalities of Conner, Kabugao, Calanasan, Luna, Pudtol, Sta. Marcela, and Flora. PEF Project Officer Susana Legaspi gave a short talk about the Philippine eagle followed by a screening of the 10-minute documentary, “Kalayaan: We’ll Watch For You”. Youth from the communities, their families, and barangay officials joined the program in understanding what it means to be good neighbors to the eagles.

As we strive to bring about behavior change in Filipinos, we also had a series of education campaigns across the municipality of Apayao. With the help of the local government and San Roque Power Corporation, we reached seven (7) barangays and helped them get to know better the Philippine eagle and its value to our environment.

The Philippine Eagle Week 2023 AgiLaya Campaign in Apayao is brought to you by San Roque Power Corporation and the Provincial Government of Apayao.
